The current Unit Of Inquiry for Ks are How the World Works with the Central Idea that materials have properties that can be manipulated for specific purposes. A large variety of nonfiction books have been taken from our own Orchard Campus library, as well as from the public library at Bishan. Here is a list of public library books borrowed for on different materials.
The book I selected to kick off this unit is A Rock Can Be by Laura Purdie Salas. She is the author of more than a 100 children's books on poetry, fiction and nonfiction, including the "Can be" series from which this book is from.
Before reading "A Rock Can Be", the Ks told me where they found rocks, how they are used and what they can be part of. Their answers are in red below. As you can see, our Ks were already very knowledgeable about rocks and their properties.
After reading the book, I asked them to share their new knowledge (in blue). With some quick discussions in pairs and visual cues, students could give varied and enthusiastic responses.
