Y5 Evaluating Websites

The Internet offers instant gratification for information and due to mobile devices and one to one laptops, it is also ubiquitous.   It is the first, and in many cases only, only stop for any information needs a student has. Consequently the need to information literate and to critically evaluate information was reviewed.

Most students sensed that there was a need to assess websites, and their prior knowledge did indicated that they used some criteria for doing this.  After documenting what they already knew,  I showed the Brainpop video on Online Sources.

You can see the results of the students' understanding in two Y5 classes below. Since the Internet is their first stop for information and research, I see a need to review these criteria at every year level right into Y13.  We need to connect the criteria and evaluation process to students' immediate research needs to demonstrate that website evaluation is an imperative that can be done in a organised way.  It should be emphasised also that not every piece of information has to fulfil all the criteria for a good website, and that it depends on the situation.

In red is the additional criteria they learned from the Brainpop video.
