Y1s are midway through their unit where they are exploring movement to understand forces that are used in daily life. To connnect to the central ideas and lines of inquiry, I read one of my favourites poetry picture books, The Giant Jam Sandwich by John Vernon Lord and Janet Burroway.

The story involves a village creating a giant strawberry jam sandwich to trap the wasps that invade it. In the process, there are many simple machines, daily movement and forces of motions that students are able to identify and apply to the story.
